Filipino cyclist wins Asean Mountain Bike championship in Brunei. MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported in its website Wednesday that a 22 year-old Filipino from Cebu won the 1st ASEAN Mountain Bike Championship 2009 held at the Berakas Forest Recreational Park in Brunei Darussalam last month.

Niño Surban was the only Filipino cyclist to join the competition. The DFA said the 48-kilometer cross-country competition was participated in by cyclists from Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Brunei Darussalam. Read more…

Philippines tops Earth Hour participation.

Over 15 million Filipinos in 647 major cities and towns in the Philippines switched off lights for 60 minutes to observe “Earth Hour” last Saturday, the Word Wildlife Fund-Philippines reported.

WWF-Philippines said the Philippines “edged out all other countries for the biggest number of participating cities and towns trailed by Greece with 484 and Australia with 309 - proving that Filipinos can rise up to the challenge of climate change.” Read more…

Filipina wins Teen Idol contest

John Hopkins student wins Teen Idol contest. Amanda Puyot, who attends John Hopkins Middle School of St. Petersburg, won the Largo Teen Idol contest on March 24 at the Largo Cultural Center.

After competing with eight other finalists, Amanda will go on to sing the national anthem at a Dunedin Blue Jays game.

This is the second victory since February for Amanda. She also won the “Run Away with Cirque Dreams” contest to perform in Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. Filipina wins Teen Idol contest. Read more…

Filipino dancer wins DC Mayor’s Arts Awards

Filipino dancer wins DC Mayor’s Arts Awards. WASHINGTON D.C., United States—Filipino ballet dancer and choreographer Jason Ignacio was conferred the Outstanding Emerging Artist Award during the 24th Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards given by the District of Columbia to individual artists, organizations, and patrons of the arts.

Ignacio, a professional dancer with the critically-acclaimed CityDance Ensemble who bested four other nominees in the category, said that while the award was a personal honor, he wanted to offer it to his country the Philippines. Read more…
